Assessment of Energy Efficient Heating Technologies as an alternative to Coal-Fuelled Stoves
FMO, the Dutch development bank, mandated MACS Energy & Water with a technology and market review to assess the feasibility of energy efficient and less harmful heating technologies as an alternative to the coal-fuelled stoves, which are in widespread use in Ulaanbaatar’s ‘Ger’ (nomad tent) districts.
Our market assessment is the first step in a wider intervention by FMO, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Mongolia Bankers Association (MBA), in the framework of the Mongolian Sustainable Finance Initiative (MSFI).
Our assessment and insights shall provide guidance in determining the most effective means to deploy investments aiming at reversing the highly unsatisfactory air quality situation faced by the residents of Ulaanbaatar. Air quality in the city has degraded over recent years – caused in large part by changing climatic conditions and the knock-on effects from the city’s rapid population expansion.
