Latin America: Rollout Strategy for GHG mitigation at WWTPs in Latin America

The Water and Sanitation Utilities for Climate Change Mitigation (WaCCliM) project is a global project implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMU).) as part of the International Climate Protection Initiative (ICPI and the International Climate Protection Initiative (IKI). The WaCCliM project implements measures in Peru and other partner countries (Jordan and Mexico).

The overall objective is to develop a strategiy for the scaling up of GHG mitigations at WWTP in Peru and other Latin American countries within the WaCCliM framework model

The main activities for the program will focus on the evaluation of the existing SEDACUSCO model to identify lessons learned and success factors in GHG mitigation in WWTPs to promote scaling up of activities in Peru and other Latin American countries, while also determining criteria for the specific selection of potential implementers (WWTP operators)

Matthias has a degree in agricultural science and postgraduate honors in rural development and more than 20 years of professional experience in international development projects. At MACS he developed into a prolific Project Manager and Institutional Expert as well as Team Leader who played a major role during the very successful rehabilitation program for water and sanitation in Batumi (Georgia).

In the field of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Matthias has developed a profile for himself and MACS through his work of coordinating the finance division for energy projects in the framework of the Green for Growth Fund (GGF), which has earned a reputation as one of the leading EE/RE funds today.

As one of the Partners and Managing Directors of MACS, Matthias is responsible for operations and financial management at MACS.
